Margin of victory for tournament solutions

چکیده

Tournament solutions are frequently used to select winners from a set of alternatives based on pairwise comparisons between alternatives. Prior work has shown that several common tournament tend large winner sets and therefore have low discriminative power. In this paper, we propose general framework for refining solutions. order distinguish winning alternatives, also non-winning ones, introduce the notion margin victory (MoV) MoV is robustness measure individual alternatives: For winners, captures distance dropping out set, non-winners, entering set. each case, measured in terms which would be reversed achieve desired outcome. solutions, including top cycle, uncovered Banks determine complexity computing provide worst-case bounds both non-winners. Our results can viewed perspective bribery manipulation.

Estimating the Margin of Victory for Instant-Runoff Voting

A general definition is proposed for the margin of victory of an election contest. That definition is applied to Instant Runoff Voting (IRV)1 and several estimates for the IRV margin of victory are described: two upper bounds and two lower bounds. Given round-by-round vote totals, the time complexity for calculating these bounds does not exceed O(C logC), where C is the number of candidates. It...

3 Tournament Solutions

Perhaps one of the most natural ways to aggregate binary preferences from individual agents to a group of agents is simple majority rule, which prescribes that one alternative is socially preferred to another whenever a majority of agents prefers the former to the latter. Majority rule intuitively appeals to democratic principles, is easy to understand and—most importantly—satisfies some attrac...

Extending Tournament Solutions

An important subclass of social choice functions, so-called majoritarian (or C1) functions, only take into account the pairwise majority relation between alternatives. In the absence of majority ties—e.g., when there is an odd number of agents with linear preferences—the majority relation is antisymmetric and complete and can thus conveniently be represented by a tournament. Tournaments have a ...

Query Complexity of Tournament Solutions

A directed graph where there is exactly one edge between every pair of vertices is called a tournament. Finding the “best” set of vertices of a tournament is a well studied problem in social choice theory. A tournament solution takes a tournament as input and outputs a subset of vertices of the input tournament. However, in many applications, for example, choosing the best set of drugs from a g...

Estimating the Margin of Victory of an Election Using Sampling

The margin of victory of an election is a useful measure to capture the robustness of an election outcome. It also plays a crucial role in determining the sample size of various algorithms in post election audit, polling etc. In this work, we present efficient sampling based algorithms for estimating the margin of victory of elections. More formally, we introduce the (c, ε, δ)–MARGIN OF VICTORY...
